Have You Ever Imagined What It Would Sound Like to Step into a Painting?

June 16, 2017

Antenna is working on an exciting new project involving one of the latest developments in audio technology: 3-D spatialization. In 2018, we will be debuting three unique experimental productions at three major European cultural sites, each involving a different experience of 3D Audio. The project is called ‘Binaural Tools for the Creative Industries’ (BINCI), and aims to develop hardware and software tools to revolutionise the production of 3D sound. Together with a consortium of partners from audio producers to hardware and software developers, Antenna will explore the creative application of 3D audio and its influence on the visitor experience at cultural institutions.

Our role is to reimagine the possibilities as 3D storymakers. With the ability to add depth, distance and direction, spatialized 3D audio allows us to put the visitor right in the middle of a story. Imagine a painting where figures step out of the frame and surround you on all sides. Or a children’s tour where the listener enters a magical painting that lets them explore through sound. As our EMEA Director of Creative Strategy, Eva Wesemann puts it, “We are using this technology to tear down the last remaining barrier between the spectator and the art.

Antenna’s first production will debut in January 2018 at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, a prestigious art museum that houses classic works by Old Masters such as Rubens and Rembrandt.

Focusing on emotions and how artists depict them, we will use spatialized sound to conjure perceptions and feelings, asking questions like, “What does fear sound like?”. Our second production will be walk-through explorable 3D soundscapes at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona.

The third production and its cultural site will be announced in the coming months. To find out how Antenna can bring immersive 3Dto your institution, click the button below.
