Wartburg Castle is first German castle to be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Dating back to 1067, the castle is a location of great historical interest. It is the setting of the fabled Battle of the Bards, immortalised in Richard Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser, and the place where Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German.
