City: Pearl Harbour, Hawaii
Country: United States of America
Year Founded: 1980
Type of Institution: Military

Launched in 1942, the SS Bowfin (SS-287) submarine completed nine war patrols and sank 42 enemy ships during World War 2. The submarine was acquired from the U.S. Navy in 1979, opened to the public in 1981, and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986. The 10,000-square foot museum and park are operated by the non-profit group, the Pacific Fleet Submarine Association (PFSMA), and all ticket sale proceeds go towards restoration and preservation.  Visitors can tour the SS Bowfin and explore below decks, and pay silent tribute to submariners lost during conflict at the Waterfront Memorial.
