Street Art - Knit Just For The Young

August 30, 2017

104-year-old great-grandmother Grace Brett just might be the oldest street artist in the world. She yarn-bombed her town with the help of the Souter Stormers, a secretive group of ‘yarnstormers’ that recently yarn-bombed 46 landmarks in the Scottish county of Borders.

This has put a smile on my face – a deceptively light-hearted newsbite which I’ve seen a few online outlets pick up on, which might just contain some deceptively powerful and positive messages for the cultural sector.

Grace Bett is a 104 year-old great-grandmother who’s being hailed ‘the oldest street artist in the world’. In-line with a new concept known as ‘yarn-bombing’, which sees towns or landmarks covered in vibrant knitted decorations, Grace brought a smile to her hometown’s face by knitting all manner of colourful adornments for it.

I think this story speaks volumes: it shows the importance of supporting artists – whatever their age or background; it highlights the power of art to bring people together, and, perhaps most important of all, it proves once and for all that knitting is officially cool.
