Art and culture create health and welfare

February 15, 2017

In recent decades it has received more attention and art began to be the action of changes which follows the state of health, as it has been defined by the WHO (World Health Organization): not merely the absence of disease and infirmity, but a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing. The growing awareness of the social dimension of experiencing art and participation in culture, generated artistic proposals in illegitimacy areas and they became vehicles for the interpretation and transformation of the human and social reality. Interactions thus generated have opened different paths and contexts of meaning capable of building a new paradigm of reality’s knowledge.

In times of ongoing cuts in the fields of art and culture worldwide, it’s of basic importance to remember how positive the experiencing of art and culture act on physical and mental health. But recent neuroscientific analysis have now revealed more:  the new participatory approach takes to a transformation of society that allows the individuals to gain highest levels of health and welfare.

I found this very detailed analysis by the psychoneuroimmunologist Maria di Bello really striking and very useful to study for our work of content creation for cultural sites and museums in which participation and inclusion have become one of the absolute key challenges during the last years. I hope the author will held her aim of the article to “establish a basis for a continuous survey on the subject and to generate further interest in research on engagement  with  arts and health.”
